Making plans for the spring

Landscape gardeners and garden designers in Glasgow have been lucky enough to remain busy over this winter, with interest in landscape gardening projects remaining high throughout. Often landscape gardeners and garden designers take a chunk of time off in January, but not this year!

For garden designers, winter is a great opportunity to look at a garden’s structure, without it being obscured by the leaves of most of the plants. This makes it easier to really get to grips with a new garden design project, and if - as in Glasgow this year - the weather has remained relatively mild, it has been easy enough to carry out surveys.

For landscape gardeners life can be a little more difficult, principally because it is not ideal to work with soil in wet conditions, and for hard landscapers the temperature needs to be over around 5 degrees in order to work with cement. For soft landscaping there is no such problem, however working in and on wet soil needs to be carefully considered.

One aspect of landscape gardeners’ lives becomes incredibly busy over the winter months - that of bare-root and rootball planting. This translate as tree planting and hedge planting, with winter being the best time to do this as the plants are dormant.Tree and hedge planting over the winter is more cost-effective too. Some shrubs also come in a bare-root form, including planting of roses.

All in all, winter is a great time to start thinking about your garden design projects, and ideal for speaking to landscape gardeners to get the ball rolling.
